The Beauty of Worship
A Photo Essay
Some of the world’s most glorious and awe-inspiring edifices have been the outcome of religious architecture. For thousands of years, religion has played an important role in shaping people’s beliefs, attitudes and behaviour. Consequently, temples, churches and mosques have been grand, expressive and important structures.
Whether it is the Parthenon in Athens, the Pantheon in Rome, the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Notre Dame in Paris, Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar or Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi – to name just a few – they are spiritually and visually beautiful.
Bengaluru’s association with places of worship is many centuries old. Temples were built in the ninth century during the times of Gangas and Cholas. The city’s founder Kempe Gowda built many temples in and around the city. Mosques came up during the Mughal era and also during the rule of both Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. The British rule gave us several grand churches.
